Its neighbourhoods, built on incredibly steep hillsides, are a fascinating sight and an intriguing subject for urban planners from around the world. Manizales is located within the wider region influenced by the active Nevado del Ruiz volcano, and the surrounding area faces recurring risks from earthquakes and landslides. The city has therefore developed extensive experience in disaster risk management and in engineering solutions designed to stabilise slopes and make buildings more resilient. Many older hillside houses were traditionally built using a technique known as bahareque, which combines a framework of bamboo, particularly Guadua, with earth and other natural materials. This flexible construction method can help buildings withstand seismic movement better than conventional unreinforced brick masonry. Founded in 1848, Manizales became an important centre of Colombia’s coffee-growing region during the coffee boom. In the past, coffee harvested on the surrounding mountain slopes was even transported from here by a remarkable cableway, once considered the longest aerial cableway in the world. CZ Město leží ve výšce zhruba 2 150 metrů nad mořem přímo na hřebeni andského pohoří Cordillera Central. Pohled na zdejší čtvrti postavené na neuvěřitelně strmých svazích fascinuje urbanisty z celého světa. Leží v blízkosti aktivního vulkánu Nevado del Ruiz a celá oblast čelí častým rizikům zemětřesení a sesuvů půdy.
